QATAR WILL HOST FIFA'S CLUB WORLD CUP 2019 & 2020 EDITION
FIFA'S CLUB WORLD CUP
The FIFA Club World Cup is an international men's
association football competition organised by the Fédération Internationale de
Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body.
The current format of the tournament involves seven teams
competing for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about
two weeks; the winners of that year's AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF
Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North America), Copa
Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania) and UEFA Champions
League (Europe), along with the host nation's national champions, participate
in a straight knock-out tournament.
QATAR TO HOST FIFA'S CLUB WORLD CUP
Qatar will hold the next two editions of Fifa's Club World
Cup tournament in 2019 and 2020. These two tournaments will act as warm-up
events for the 2022 World Cup, which will also be held in Qatar.
The seven-team club tournament, which will include European
champion Liverpool this year, will be played in this December and in December
2020, FIFA confirmed on Monday.
The decision to give Qatar the Club World Cup comes two
weeks after FIFA settled on 32 countries for the 2022 World Cup rather than
expanding to 48 teams.
The Club World Cup has recently been held in Japan and the
United Arab Emirates with seven competing teams - six continental champions and
a team from the host nation.
After Qatar hosts the final two editions of the tournament
in its present format, FIFA will revamp it to include 24 teams, a move that has
been opposed by the European Club Association (ECA) which has issued a boycott
threat.
