QATAR THE RICHEST AND SAFEST COUNTRY - A LOOK AT ITS HISTORY AND REMARKABLE TRANSFORMATION
QATAR – A LOOK AT ITS HISTORY AND REMARKABLE TRANSFORMATION
Qatar is
an independent sovereign State. It is a peninsula located along the middle of
the western coast of the Arabian Gulf. The peninsula has a length of
approximately 200 km, with a total area of 11,850 sq km, including a number of
islands.
Over the past few decades, Qatar has undergone remarkable
transformation in terms of economic growth. Old excavations and sculptures
indicate that Qatar was inhabited as early as the fourth century BC.
Before World War II, Qatar’s economy was primarily characterized by fishing, pearling and some trade and was one of the poorest in
the world. However, the discovery of oil reserves in the 1940s has led to its
development into one of the biggest multifaceted economies in the world. The
growth in gas and oil revenues has led to an improvement in the social patterns
of the lives of Qataris and its immigrants.
Qatar was
ruled by a number of local and foreign dynasties before falling under the
control of the Āl Thānī (Thānī dynasty) in the 19th century.
After investing heavily in liquefied natural-gas technology,
Qatar is now one of the leading exporters
in the world. The Qatar Central Bank (Maṣraf Qaṭar al-Markazī), founded in
1993, provides banking functions for the state and issues the Qatari rial, the
national currency.
The twenty-seventh of June 1995 is considered an important
date in the Qatari calendar, as this marks the day on which Sheikh Hamad bin
Khalifa Al Thani became the Emir of Qatar.
Qatar is, by now, the Richest Country in The World, with a
GNI per capital of $116,799 -- more than $20,000 higher than any other nation.
Today, ethnic Qataris are actually a minority within
Qatar. Approximately 20% of the
population is Qatari and the rest of the population consists of sizeable
expatriate communities.
The Islamic faith places great emphasis on behaviors such as
generosity, respect and modesty which most Qatari will display.
